The Road to Recovery: Low Carbon Futures

A recent report released by Carbon Trust analysed 6 different categories: food and drink, fuel, commuting, airlines, electrical stores, and clothing stores to provide data for their report and make up their findings.

The data shows that on an overall scale greenhouse gas emissions are down by 14% compared to previous years. Fuel, commuting, and airline categories saw a steep reduction in spending by 41% during the COVID-19 imposed lockdown. Spending trends remain low after the easing of lockdown restrictions.

In contrast, the food & drink and electrical purchase categories saw an increase of 20%. This increase was offset by drastic reductions in alternative categories.

The report also showed that the total C02 footprint resulting from clothing purchases was 45% lower than in 2019.

Carbon Trust believe that these findings and trends may be a steppingstone to a low carbon future. A survey conducted by YouGov found that 30% of adults within the UK were adapting their lifestyles post-lockdown to reduce their carbon footprints and become more conscious of their impact on the environment. This included limiting the use of cars and planes and avoiding shopping at large conglomerate stores to reduce carbon output.

A further poll of 2000 UK citizens found that 79% of people surveyed want the UK’s recovery package to align with net-zero targets.
